Health Food

Health food in China covers 2 categories:

  • Functional health food
  • Nutritional supplements

Functional health food in China is defined as “food products that claim to have specific health functions”. These specific health claims must belong to one or more of the 27 approved health claims. In addition, the health claim of the product must be supported by scientific tests which must be performed by SAMR appointed labs.  In other words, it refers to a food suitable for consumption by specific groups of people and has the effect of regulating human body functions but is not used for the purpose of treating disease. SAMR certified health foods are required to use a blue hat logo in the products to identify them as ‘health foods’, hence they are sometimes referred to as ‘blue hat products’.

Nutritional supplements are characterised as ‘supplements with minerals and vitamins as the main active ingredients. Only a very limited number of vitamins, minerals and food additives can be included as nutritional supplements.
